Many people think of crochet bags as everyday bags, but Cui Zhang notes that the new season’s versions use precious materials and innovative technology to showcase the style’s versatility. “Valentino showed bags with leather fringe in the spring and a fully crystallized version in early fall, and it filled me with fantasy,” she says.
These modern styles can be easily adapted for a variety of occasions, from holidays (of course) to occasions like weddings, and even paired with workwear, reinforcing the idea that crochet bags can elegantly complement any outfit all year round. “In terms of style, crocheted bags made from natural fibers such as raffia, straw and palm create a fresh look with a loose fit, just like a pinstripe suit or crisp shirtdress,” Cui Zhang said. “We’ve seen crochet move from bags to ready-to-wear (think Diotima) and shoes (from Prada and JW Anderson). I welcome crochet as a creative way to add texture from head to toe.”
